The nearly 30 MW wind farm that began operations this spring in the Akmenė Free Economic Zone (Lithuania) marks not only the expansion of renewable energy, but also the growing role of digital solutions in the energy sector. The project features energy management solutions developed by Lithuanian technology company Inion Software, enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, and optimization of the wind farm’s operations.
The wind farm developed in the Akmenė FEZ is a significant renewable energy project focused on industrial energy needs. The 29.5 MW facility consists of five 5.9 MW wind turbines, with estimated annual electricity generation reaching approximately 103,000 MWh.
All electricity generated at the site is supplied exclusively to companies operating within the Akmenė FEZ territory through the FEZ-managed distribution network. As a result, the project directly contributes to the energy independence of businesses operating in the zone and reduces their exposure to electricity market price fluctuations.
According to Dr. Šarūnas Stanaitis, CEO of Inion Software, projects of this scale require not only generation infrastructure, but also advanced operational management.
According to him, wind farms generate vast amounts of data, while their performance depends on constantly changing conditions, making real-time decision-making essential. As a result, efficient energy management becomes one of the key prerequisites for smooth and reliable operations.
“Today, in the energy sector, it is no longer enough to simply generate electricity — it must also be intelligently managed. Our solutions will provide real-time visibility into the entire wind farm’s performance, help identify inefficiencies, enable faster responses to changing conditions, and support more accurate operational decisions. This will help reduce downtime, optimize electricity generation, and ensure more stable and efficient operations. More efficient energy production and consumption will also strengthen the competitiveness of companies operating within the Akmenė FEZ,” he says.
This is not the first large-scale business-related project where Inion Software has implemented its solutions.
Last year, the company successfully deployed its proprietary monitoring and control system for a 1 MW battery energy storage system with more than 2 MWh capacity at the Švyturys–Utenos alus brewery. The storage system operates together with a 2.5 MW solar power plant installed at the brewery. The total capacity of power plants connected to the Inion Software platform is now approaching 1 GW.
